PSG president sends out warning over Barcelona’s ‘dangerous’ financial situation

The general consensus ahead of the summer transfer window was that Barcelona were down and out due to their horrific financial situation. After all, the club was sunk in debt and there seemed no fathomable way for them to recover in a matter of months.

Still, the summer window arrived and Barcelona made some of the most stunning transfers. From signing Robert Lewandowski to Franck Kessie and Andreas Christensen to Raphinha, the Catalans have found a way to make the impossible possible.

Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi addressed the ECA assembly today, during which he expressed his thoughts on Barcelona’s miraculous financial recovery. Needless to say, he had no kind words for the Blaugrana club, as COPE revealed.

“We have to watch out for dangerous levels of debt and magical injections of capital. This is not a sustainable path. We have to think long-term.”

Ironically, it is his club that have made the news for splashing the cash in the transfer market in recent years. To this day, it remains a mystery how the Parisian giants were not sanctioned for Financial Fair Play.

Later in the proceedings, the PSG president also spoke about how the Champions League must adapt to fend off competition from a possible European Super League.

“We have to make more inclusive competitions, that our income grows. That’s what has happened in the English Premier League and the French Ligue 1. We have grown by 150% in the United States, we have Paramount as a partner… we must be innovative.”

With the help of their recent signings, Barcelona have become a formidable force both domestically and in Europe.

Xavi’s side have already picked up sixteen of a possible eighteen points in La Liga and put up a promising display against Bayern Munich at Allianz Arena earlier this month.
