Last night El Mundo leaked confidential details regarding Lionel Messi’s demands to sign a new contract with Barcelona back in 2020.
The report included details such as the seven-time Ballon d’Or’s demands for a private box for him and Luis Suarez’s family at the Camp Nou, a €10m renewal bonus and repayment for a pay cut, among others.
Now Barcelona has issued an official statement condemning the leaks, saying the information released was part of a legal proceeding. A statement from the Catalan giants reads as follows:
“In relation to the information published today in El Mundo del Siglo XXI under the title ‘BarçaLeaks, the club’s secret archives, part 1’, FC Barcelona expresses its indignation at the interested leak of some information that would be part of the legal proceedings.
“The club also regrets that the media boasted that it had ‘access to a huge amount of documentation and emails in the possession of the Barçagate investigation’ when this information and documentation had not yet been shared with the parties.”
The statement further adds that Barcelona will consider legal action against the media over the leaks of confidential information.
“In any case, the article in question publishes documents that have nothing to do with the investigation of the case and their use threatens the reputation and confidentiality of the Club.
“For this reason and in order to protect FC Barcelona’s rights, the club’s legal services are already studying the appropriate measures to be taken.”
Messi ended up not signing a new contract with the club and left Barca as a free agent last year to join Paris Saint-Germain on a two-year deal.
