Over the past few days, there has been a lot of talk about the future of Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets. The veteran midfielder is in the final year of his contract with the Catalan giants and, as things stand, he has no intentions of signing a new deal.
So Busquets looks set to bid farewell to his boyhood club in less than a year. And according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the 34-year-old could end up in MLS as he looks for a new challenge in his career.
The Italian journalist reports that US clubs have been trying to sign Busquets since last year, but the midfielder has always wanted to fulfill his contract with the Blaugrana. However, he will look to move when his contract expires at the end of the season.
A move to MLS is on the horizon for the veteran Spaniard, with Romano reporting that David Beckham’s Inter Miami FC in particular will be pushing hard to sign Busquets next summer.
The MLS outfit have previously lured experienced stars of European football such as Gonzalo Higuain and Blaise Matuidi and have now set their sights on the Barcelona captain for the upcoming summer window.
With the 34-year-old also interested in a move to the US, the move could very well come to fruition. As for Barcelona, they are already working on a replacement for Busquets.
Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi, 23, has been identified as the ideal long-term heir to the La Masia graduate, with the club already making contact with his agent for information ahead of a possible move next year.
Busquets has been a mainstay in the middle of Barcelona’s park for almost 15 years. And his departure will leave a huge void in the team. It now remains to be seen whether he will sign with Inter Miami FC or another MLS outfit in the summer of 2023.
