Gerard Pique demanded a higher salary than Sergio Ramos in 2018

After the breaking revelations about Lionel Messi last night, El Mundo have also revealed several breaking news about Gerard Pique’s contract(s).

The centre-back extended his contract in 2018 on a five-year deal that would earn him a whopping €142m over the course of the deal.

The deal helped him earn a fixed salary of €12 million net each year, which can rise up to €15 million including add-ons, making him the highest paid center-back in the world.

At the time, none other than Sergio Ramos was the highest paid defender in the world and Pique wanted his salary to exceed that of his compatriot. For three years, the Real Madrid captain topped this particular table before Pique’s extension overtook him.

It was also previously reported that during talks with Real Madrid in 2020, Ramos wanted his salary to at least match, if not exceed, Pique’s, along with a two-year deal. The management of Los Blancos did not succeed in this, which only offered him a one-year extension.

Pique’s contract was obviously lucrative and included a similar structure to Messi’s as well as a loyalty bonus.

Furthermore, Pique signed another extension in 2020, during Bartomeu’s final year as president. He deferred his salary like most other players, but his new contract included compensation over the years for the same.

The report states that the 35-year-old earned €18m gross in 2020/21, €27.7m in 2021/22 and is currently (2022/23) on €29.5m. Those wages will increase once more before next season, when he would earn up to €40.8 million.

It should be noted that after yesterday’s leaked report about Messi, Barcelona officially stood up to deny the allegations. However, in the past El Mundo has been accurate about their “leaks”, the biggest of which was regarding Messi’s salary.
