According to Mundo Deportivo, Sergino Dest has attracted the interest of Manchester United as the right-back begins to look for potential suitors for himself as he sees that his services are not in demand at FC Barcelona.
The American joined Barca in the summer of 2020 following the sale of Nelson Semedo to Wolverhampton Wanderers, who previously held the right-back role at the club. The 21-year-old was seen as the next big thing for the Catalans.
However, the billing has faltered so far that the American has failed to impress any of his coaches at the Camp Nou. It even seems that Xavi Hernandez now prefers Ronald Araujo or Sergi Roberto to the American at right-back.
Under contract until 2025, Dest understood the message Xavi and the club gave him when he was left out of the squad against Rayo Vallecano on Saturday.
The right-back feels under pressure to accept the offer but remains firm in his idea that he will not move because he is confident in his qualities to earn a place in the starting eleven and because he personally feels very comfortable at Barcelona.
All indications are that a war of nerves is approaching until the close of the market, with Manchester United the main club on the alert. Barça are hoping the American’s need to play regularly to avoid missing the World Cup in Qatar will force him to leave.
Barça already have a shortlist of names to take over at right-back and will be looking to get the signing done as soon as possible. The most likely candidates for the club are Thomas Meunier and Juan Foyth.
But until the sale of Desta can be completed, bringing in a new right-back could be tricky for Barcelona.
