In a fresh update provided by journalist Fabrizio Romano, it has been confirmed that although Frenkie de Jong’s priority has always been to stay at Barcelona, a potential salary reduction is very unlikely from his side.

As previously reported, Barcelona have made a confusing deal in which they have asked the midfielder to accept a pay cut if he wants to continue.

Barcelona understands that de Jong’s departure will not only bring big money but will also free up some kind of space that can be used to bring guarantees.

But as Man United have yet to discuss personal terms with the player, there is a good chance he could end up staying at Camp Nou.

In terms of sports, it would be a blessing to hide but from an economic point of view, Barcelona will be in big trouble as it puts in the pocket of ten million euros a year.

So far, both Barcelona and Manchester United have settled on 65 million euros. The only thing left to do now is to negotiate the remaining 20 million Euros that will be part of the extension structure.

Understandably, Manchester United are trying to put a damper on their flexibility so that they do not have to pay more. For Barcelona, however, they want to repay a large portion of the first 75 million euros they paid to Ajax in 2019.

Therefore, they insist on making these changes easier.

In the meantime, in addition to discussing the obvious additions, Manchester United should also discuss personal terms with the midfielder.

It’s not that they don’t have the financial muscle to match or even raise his salary, but the lack of Champions League football next season hurts their ambitions and seems to be the only way out.

The agreement between Barcelona and Manchester United is very close, but the transfer is far from being one.
